Razor-Qt, Using the Light Desktop Environment with Qt-based

KDE users both KDE3 and KDE4 must have sensed how “heavy” desktop environment on this one. Although about the “weight” can be said to be very relative and very subjective, but when compared with GNOME2 KDE or XFCE it will always be considered the most severe. Problem use of resources both CPU and RAM, KDE is slightly above both the GTK +-based DE. But compensation “high consumption” these resources can be considered comparable to a “lifestyle” KDE shine and everything there. We’ll get a desktop environment that is ready for everything, for Qt and KDE libraries already provide what is needed by a desktop application.

Oops, but this time I will not talk about KDE. I want to write about my experience using a lightweight desktop environment based on Qt that may have never existed before (please correct). If GTK + has a lot of lightweight desktop environments like XFCE, LXDE and OpenBox, the Razor-Qt is probably the only lightweight desktop environment a la Qt.

As a GUI toolkit, Qt actually already have the facilities that are complete and stable. Another highlight is the thumbs up, as a GUI toolkit Qt is very consistent. In contrast to the GTK + which does provide the facility to vary the look of the GUI users as they pleased. Well, Qt features a complete and consistent was used by Christopher Regali incorporated in the community of developers of Qt Desktop (http://www.qtdesktop.org/) to create a Qt-based desktop environment that can be used on many platforms with a sense that less is more the same (consistent).

To build a razor-qt package in Slackware, we need an additional library that is udisks and upower. Udisks razor-qt will be used to configure the data storage device, while upower will be used to configure the device provider of computer power. After that we can build a razor-qt along with several additional applications that can be seen in the page list Qt Desktop application.

If we do not want to add / build additional applications, we (Slackware users) can use KDE’s applications or XFCE. Keep in mind is razor-qt does not have a window manager that can be aligned with kwin, xfwm, metacity, or Openbox. Usually people use Openbox as window manager. Examples like the following picture.

The drawback is that we can not use compiz or Openbox with razor-qt. Instead we can use xcompmgr or Xorg’s composite manager. It’s not like compiz or kwin’s desktop effects, but enough to feel the 3D desktop effects. Simply run the following command in a terminal or inserted into the autostart list via desktop configuration from the razor-qt.
