Install Emerald Theme Manager in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

If you’ve been using Linux long enough and happy to modify it, certainly familiar with the Emerald Theme Manager. Emerald is a window decorator application that supports the theme and easily modified, plus it is fully supported by Compiz Emerald. However, unfortunately Emerald can not be installed easily in Oneiric because it was not in the repo. Moreover there is now a Unity. The question is can run on Unity Emerald? There is no harm in trying the trick on this one.

Open Terminal and run the following command to install the equipment needed to compile the Emerald:

sudo apt-get install git autoconf libtool libwnck1.0-cil-dev libwnck-dev intltool libdecoration0-dev 

after the required equipment has been installed, the road the following command to download the Emerald with the patches to run on Unity (Ubuntu Ubuntu 11.04 and 11:10) and then immediately compile and install it:

wget http://cgit.compiz.org/fusion/decorators/emerald/snapshot/emerald-0.9.4.tar.gz

tar -xf emerald-0.9.4.tar.gz

cd emerald-0.9.4

cd src

rm main.c

wget http://www.learn-digital.com/ubuntu/emerald-0.9.4/src/main.c

cd ..

./autogen.sh && make clean && make distclean && ./configure –prefix=/usr && make && gksu make install

If all goes well, you should be able to directly use Emerald. I’ve tried this trick at 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot Ubuntu with XFCE, not to try at Unity you so use at own risk!
